A CBC test is one of the most commonly prescribed blood tests. The diagnostic evaluation can help detect blood disorders and other conditions. It is conducted to comprehensively measure and evaluate different components in the blood. Depending on the abnormal levels, whether high or low, the doctor may be able to draw out a conclusion and order further tests or prescribe medications.
This test primarily measures the three following features that make up the blood cells:
- Red blood cells: A red blood cell or RBC is primarily responsible for transporting oxygen in your lungs to other body organs and tissues. The test looks for the RBC count (which is the number of red blood cells in the sample), haemoglobin (which assesses the number of oxygen-carrying proteins found in RBCs), and hematocrit (which measures overall blood volume carrying the RBCs).
- White blood cells: Also known as leukocytes, these white blood cells comprise an essential component of your immune system. The standard CBC test measures the white blood cell count in the sample. The WBCs are also broken down into five components. It includes neutrophils (these comprise the majority of the white blood cells and are manufactured by bone marrow to fight against infections and inflammatory diseases), lymphocytes (these are T-cells and B-cells which are found in the lymph system and fight pathogens and bacteria in your blood), and monocytes (they work alongside neutrophils to fight off illnesses and infections that may happen during removal of dead or damaged cells). Moreover, it also includes basophils (they help in the early detection of the conditions and aid in allergic reactions and wound repair) and eosinophils (which are activated when some infection or allergy attacks you.)
- Platelets: The blood cells that support clotting are known as platelets or thrombocytes. If you get an open wound and start to bleed, platelets will limit loss of blood by facilitating clotting at the wound site.
