Q: What is Lucentis injection and how does it work?
A: Lucentis injection belongs to a class of medications called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antagonists. Lucentis is used for the treatment of conditions that affect vision such as exudative (wet) neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD), macular edema (swelling) following retinal vein occlusion and macular edema (swelling) due to diabetes. Lucentis binds extracellular VEGF thereby stopping abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in the eye(s) which may lead to vision loss in people with wet AMD.
